Mütterpflege; Everything You Need to Know

1. What is Mütterpflege?

Mütterpflege provides tailored postpartum support to mothers during the weeks following childbirth. It combines practical assistance with emotional care, helping mothers adjust to life with a newborn. This includes managing household tasks, sibling care, running errands, and providing guidance on newborn care, breastfeeding, and bonding.

2. How is Mütterpflege different from a midwife’s services?

A midwife provides medical support, including checkups, wound care, and breastfeeding assistance. Mütterpflege, on the other hand, focuses on practical, emotional, and household support to reduce the mental load of new mothers. Example: While a midwife ensures medical recovery, I assist with daily chores, care for siblings, hold the baby while you shower or even offer a comforting cup of tea while you rest.

3. What types of support do you provide?

In your personalized care plan, I can assist with:

  • Household Help: Cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping.

  • Mama Support: I can attend to baby while you rest, eat or shower.

  • Sibling Care: Keeping older children entertained and cared for.

  • Errands and Appointments: Accompanying you to doctor visits or postnatal exercise classes.

  • Mother & Baby Care: Guidance on newborn care, babywearing techniques, and breastfeeding.

  • Emotional Support: A listening ear for you or your partner during this life-changing period.

  • Implementation of Midwife’s Advice: Helping you follow through with any guidance from your midwife.

4. Is Mütterpflege covered by insurance?

Yes, postpartum care through Mütterpflege may be partially or fully covered by public health insurance under Haushaltshilfe (household help).

5. How do I apply for insurance coverage for Mütterpflege?

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Obtain the Antrag auf Haushaltshilfe (Application for Household Help) from your insurance provider’s website or app.

  2. Have your doctor certify that you need assistance due to medical reasons (they will need to sign and stamp the form).

  3. Submit the completed application to your insurance provider.

I can assist you with completing the application to ensure a smooth process.

6. What medical conditions qualify for insurance-covered Mütterpflege?
